Match Instructions
-
First thing to remember - This game is for the children!
-
Practice good sportsmanship at all times. The players learn from watching us and the parents. Bad attitudes or language will not be tolerated. Any player, coach or parent will be instructed to leave the soccer complex if either of these occur. No questions asked!
-
All players are required to wear shin guards at all games and practices.
-
Playing Time: All players participating in the South Carolina United YMCA Recreational League must play at least half of the total game time. The only time that a player will not play half the game is when he or she is unable to do so due to injury or a suspension.
-
Mercy Rule: Once a game reaches a plus 5 goal differential, coaches must start to employ the mercy rule. First the coach of the team that is down is allowed to add one player for each additional goal differential up to seven. It is not the job of the official to add players; it is the responsibility of the coach! If the goal differential reaches 7, the team that is up must remove the goal keeper. Play will remain this way until the goal differential reaches 2. At that point play will return to standard rules for that age group. This will make the games fun and challenging at the same time.
Below are some measures that can be used to try to keep the score from getting out-of-hand. If the team that is down is unable to add players the team that is up must remove their goal keeper first and additional players if the goal differential keeps rising.
*Place your stronger forward players in goal or defense and do not let them cross the halfway line.
*Substitute out the stronger players/primary goal scorers.
*When playing one player short, play short in midfield, forward or goalkeeper.
*Play 3-touch soccer--Don’t allow your players to take more than 3 touches once they are in the opponent’s half of the field.
*Instruct your team to:
- Pass a minimum of 5 times on each possession prior to shooting.
- Take all shots from outside the penalty area.
- Ask players to work on taking shots with their weaker foot.
All of these things can be done subtly so that the other team can feel good about their increased competitiveness. Please do not ask your player to play "keep away" -- this can be viewed as rubbing it in.
Other ethical coaching practices:
+ Encourage your players to quietly celebrate goals as opposed to high-fives, etc.
+ Remind sideline supporters to cheer/celebrate quietly and be supportive of both teams.
+ Play a low-key role from the sidelines -- avoid the temptation to keep coaching vocally from the sidelines.
