2006-07 PMSL State Cup Finalists

SCYSA Publix President's Medal State Cup, May 5-6, 2007

The Columbia United FC U14 Challenge Girls were named Finalists in the SCYSA Publix President’s Medal State Cup held May 5-6 in Summerville.

The team had a very good day on Saturday winning 4-0 over CUSC White and defeating USA Spirit 3-0. U14 Challenge then faced eventual champion ASA X-treme in a very intense game at 8:00 AM on Sunday that resulted in a 0-0 draw. Later on Sunday the team suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss to LCSC Force but still finished second on points in the round-robin tournament format. Congratulations to Columbia United FC U14 Challenge Girls for a great season culminating in a second place State Cup finish!

In its inaugural South Carolina Challenge Cup season, Columbia United FC was proud of its 13 (out of a possible 15) teams who qualified for Cup play!   Determined by the strength of the leagues in which our teams play and the rankings of our teams in those leagues, of our 13 teams that qualified, Columbia United FC wound up with four of its teams seeded 2nd in their respective age group playoff brackets, two teams with 4th seeds, one team with a 5th seed, two teams with 6th seeds, two teams with 7th seeds and two teams with 8 seeds.  To put our success in further perspective, when comparing Columbia United FC to other Columbia area youth soccer clubs, the only other clubs to qualify any team or teams for Challenge Cup play were Lexington Soccer Club (which qualified 4 teams seeded 3rd, 7th, 7th and 8th) and Congaree Rapid Soccer Association (which qualified 1 team seeded 7th).  Congratulations to each for having so qualified!

As a result of several well-played first round matches, Columbia United FC advanced six (6) of its teams to the semifinal round of Cup play.  No other club in the state advanced as many teams through to the semi-finals round, other than Upstate District club, CESA, out of Greenville. Bridge FA in the Lower State advanced five (5) teams and Mount Pleasant advanced three (3).  Congratulations to all for having advanced!

The six Columbia United FC teams who advanced were: the U15 Boys Elite team coached by Rob Strickland (USSF B License), the U15 Girls Elite team coached by Joe Eberlin (USSF B License), the U16 Girls Elite team coached by Dick Hiller (NSCAA A License ), the U17 Boys Elite Team coached by Tripp Miller (USSF B License), the U18 Girls Elite team coached by Phil Savitz (NSCAA A License) and the U18 Boys Elite team coached by Adrian Pinasco (USSF B License ). Congratulations to not only these coaches and their players but also to all Columbia United FC coaches and players on all 13 of our teams which participated.  Thank you for representing Columbia United FC so well on the pitch, as always, whether you win, draw or lose!

And as for the other Midstate District soccer clubs which had a team or teams qualify for State Cup play and then advance by winning a first-roun match, congratulations are in order to Lexington Soccer Club’s U17 Boys team.  Congratulations are also in order to Discoveries Soccer Club’s U16 Boys team that defeated our Columbia United FC U16 Elite team in a 2-1 thriller in Rock Hill as well as to the North Augusta Soccer Club in North Augusta which advanced its U16 Girls team.  Congratulations!
